Black Walnut Dining Table

If you’re like me, every time you wander through a furniture store, you feel a little insulted. Here you are, a man, staring at relatively simple furniture, being asked to lay down large sums of money for a bookshelf, dining set, or desk. And if you know enough about wood to spot laminate and fiberboard, you’ll quickly see these expensive pieces of furniture have a shelf life of about two years.

The dining room table has historically been one of the most central places in our homes. This is where we gather with family and friends to celebrate holidays or special occasions. On a daily basis it is an informal place for work and other projects or for relaxing conversation with friends. For all of these important moments, a solid wood dining table is perhaps the most comfortable, functional, and beautiful choice you can make.

Today I want to show you my latest project that’s ever lasting. A solid Black Walnut dining table.

Woodworking matters. It's more than a hobby—being a woodworker means that you know the satisfaction and pride that comes from using your hands and mind to build beautiful, functional objects and that you're as interested in the process as the outcome. Amid the speed and chaos of the modern world, woodworking gives us a place where we can slow down, pay attention and take the time to do things right.
